Belgian policy paper on the reception of asylum seekers and other beneficiaries

This policy paper presents measures proposed by the new Secretary of State to remedy the reception crisis that Belgium urgently needs to overcome. Key measures, related costs and impacts are presented.

The following key measures will be developed to get out of the crisis situation:

  1. The length of stay in reception structures will be reduced
  2. The persons who receive an order to leave the territory will be supported with a view to elaborating their return route
  3. The outflow of persons who are granted refugee status, subsidiary protection or regularization will be improved
  4. The capacity of reception structures will be increased
  5. Based on a distribution plan, municipalities will further contribute to the reception of asylum seekers
  6. Financial support is excluded
  7. Quality support will be provided in an integrated way (procedure, exit and return)
  8. Vulnerable unaccompanied minors will granted specific care
  9. Abuse and fraud will be addressed
  10. The reception network will be evaluated (costs-benefits analysis) and optimized (database)
  11. Voluntary return will be further encouraged and more efficiently integrated in the reception process
