What

This lecture is part of the the VOICES FROM ABROAD lecture series organized by the Institute of Development Policy and Management and The Center for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS, University of Antwerp).

During the lecture on "Transnationalism: a brief epistemological history", Prof. Luis E. Guarnizo (University of California, Davis) puts particular emphasis on the dynamic intersection between transnational theoretical arguments and their adoption by many migrant sending states. He contends that state’s adoption of a transnational perspective in great part explains a series of official policies seeking to engage migrants in their homeland’s national project. These policies and initiatives, in turn, have resulted in a significant reconfiguration of national political institutions such as national citizenship and national civil society.
